Several times the Old Testament refers to Israel as a vine that was supposed to produce fruit (cf. Isaiah 5:1–7; Hosea 10:1–2; Psalm 80:8–19). However, Israel did not produce the fruit of justice and righteousness that was expected of her because she continually turned away from God. Jesus contrasts Himself with Israel by saying, “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser” (John 15:1). Jesus is righteous and just, and in Him is true life. He teaches the disciples that apart from the true vine, they cannot produce fruit. They must abide in Him, and He will produce the fruit of the Spirit in them.
