We are in a soul-forming world that often shapes us through suffering. But the joy that it will produce is boundless. John 20 gives us a glimpse into that reality. The very thing that caused the disciples to be full of sorrow and despair, Jesus’ crucifixion, now brings them great joy. His resurrection is far more beautiful than anything they could have imagined in the midst of their previous pain. It gives them an eternal perspective. Like the disciples, we will have true joy only when we recognize that everything is Christocentric rather than egocentric. Jesus Christ shatters our expectations and frees us from our bondage, reminding us that everything points to Him, not to us.
