The first half of John’s Gospel is centered around seven “signs” of Jesus. John often records the reactions of people who witnessed these signs to reveal something about the Kingdom of God.
Following the first of these signs, in which Jesus turns water into wine, Jesus encounters Nicodemus, who comes to Him in secret at night. Jesus explains to him that one must be “born again” to enter the Kingdom of God. As a Pharisee, Nicodemus should have known a great many things about the Hebrew scriptures. But Jesus’ words confuse him. He takes them at the material level rather than the spiritual.
