We often hold our plans with tightly clenched fingers, seeking control over our schedules and mastery over interruptions. But God’s plans cannot be thwarted by our own.
We need to align our wills with God’s, even when it doesn’t make sense to us. At the end of the day, He is God, and we are not. We need to surrender to His purposes and let Him guide us. Seeking after Him, praying, and asking for wise counsel are good steps to take when making a plan. At the end of the day, though, our plans are in His hands.
Acts 16 gives us an example of this: Paul and the missionaries with him want to go into Asia to preach the gospel, but the Holy Spirit prevents them from doing so. They then try to go to Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus keeps them from doing that as well. Despite their good intentions, God has a different plan for the missionaries.
There is always a reason for God’s plans, even though we may not understand this side of eternity. Like Paul, however, we need to trust Him and listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Even though we cannot see the fullness of God’s plans, we know that everything will work out for His glory.
