Spiritual gifts are important for Christian ministry. The use of them spurred the rabid growth of the early church. Through these gifts, God is glorified and others are edified. All the same, there has been much debate about the nature and exercise of these gifts. Cessationists make a distinction between sign gifts and edification gifts. They believe that sign gifts (such as tongues and prophesy) ended with the apostolic era. They do still hold to edification gifts (such as teaching). On the other hand, Spirit-centered believers tend to believe that the sign gifts have not ceased and that their use continues to this day.
