During the time of Jesus, the idea of a woman sitting at the feet of a rabbi and being taught by him would have been unseemly. Yet, this is exactly what we see happening with Jesus. Mary, rather than helping Martha with the preparation of the meal, chose to sit and learn at the feet of Jesus. She chose to do the one thing that Jesus said was necessary. This was not to say that what Martha was doing was not good. Jesus affirms both the active and contemplative life in His ministry. There is a time to work, and there is a time to simply sit at the feet of the Rabbi.
