The Israelites stood at the threshold of the place God had promised would be theirs. He told them to take it, and He was fully able to ensure their success. But they drew back in unbelief, giving as an excuse, “We look like grasshoppers in our own eyes” (Numbers 13:33).They shied away from the Promised Land, and from all God had called them to be, not because of how big the people were there, but because of how they saw themselves.[note]From Boa and Turner, The 52 Greatest Stories of the Bible, pp. 53–54.[/note] This story is a pivotal turning point in the Scriptures and in the history of the Israelites, and it has a lot to teach us about our own need to trust God and not back away in unbelief.
