What is your heart’s desire?

If we were honest with ourselves, it would probably be something from the following list:

• Possessions
• Pleasure
• Prestige
• Popularity
• Promotion
• Power
• Performance

But the book of Proverbs encourages us not to sell ourselves cheaply for the things of this world. After all, these things are temporary and will pass away. Giving our lives away for these sorts of things will never satisfy us.

Learning wisdom requires a recalibration; there’s no point in teaching wisdom if we’re not willing to accept it. Because of this, the father (or teacher) gives various exhortations to his son (or student).

These exhortations center around the idea of obtaining wisdom and avoiding folly, learning the differences between the paths of righteousness and of wickedness (Proverbs 4:18–19).

The path of wisdom is narrow and difficult to follow. Our hearts often stray from it, seeking temporary pleasures instead of what will last. But cultivating a reverential awe for God will help keep our feet on track.
