Training involves repetition. Think about how you work out: Doing one plank or one sit-up is not enough to get in shape. In order to tone your muscles, you need to repeat the exercises.
In a similar way, repetition is a crucial pedagogical tool. The first time we hear something, we often do not understand it. We need to hear something multiple times in order to grasp the concept.
The necessity of repetition applies particularly to wisdom. If we hear a wise teaching only once, chances are likely we’ll forget it. Because of this, the book of Proverbs uses pithy phrases and vivid metaphors that repeat the key truths of wisdom. As we hear the same truths in different ways, we become more inclined to put them into practice.
Being disciplined when it comes to wisdom enables us to walk in the way of the Lord, not forgetting His commandments (Proverbs 3:1). We need constant instruction so that we will not be led astray by our own foolish self-centeredness. After all, to go our own way is easy, but wisdom takes much more effort.
Even though the repetition of wisdom can be difficult, it is well worth the trouble. The more we practice it, the more we will learn to delight in it.
